According to National Geographic, there are more than 200 species of squirrels around the world. Every day animal removal professionals respond to calls to remove squirrels from attics and homes! In the United States, one of the most common wildlife pests is the Eastern Gray squirrel which lives throughout all contiguous states. Eastern Gray Squirrels (Sciurus Carolinensis) are tree squirrels. With a grizzled back, the squirrels appear dark to pale gray. Eastern Gray Squirrels can also have a red color on their hips, feet or head. Their tail runs from white to pale gray in color. Squirrels in the northern most states usually experience heavy fur growth during the winter months. Male and female squirrels appear the same in terms of size and appearance.

Eastern gray squirrels breed twice a year.Squirrels breed between December and February and then again from May to June. Female squirrels can have as many as eight babies per year during the two breeding seasons. The average squirrel litter size ranges from two to four baby squirrels. The summer litter (May-June) usually produces the most babies. Both male and female squirrels actively reproduce during their entire lives.
Squirrels easily adapt to whatever environment they find themselves them. They quickly adapt to conditions in the area and are excellent scavengers. If there is no food source where they are, squirrels will cover a lot of territory until they find some. When they identify a food source they set up home nearby. Squirrels like to build their dreys, or nests, high in trees. If there isn’t a tree available, then squirrels build their nest in any available place where they can gain access, usually an attic.
The odds are high that if you are hearing noises in your attic then you most likely have a squirrel in the attic that you will have to get rid of. Common complaints that wildlife removal experts hear that indicate someone has a squirrel problem are scratching noises coming from the attic or from behind the walls. If you are hearing this noise it’s a sure indication that a female is building a nest and preparing to give birth to her litter. You must act quickly to get squirrels out of your attic and keep them out. By taking immediate action you are able to remove the young squirrels before they begin to cause damage to your attic, home or electrical wiring. As mentioned earlier, the gray squirrel is a common wildlife pest that can create nightmares for homeowners. If Squirrels are in your attic, at a minimum they will cause damage and contamination of insulation.

Squirrels cause damage from chewing. Squirrels are rodents so their teeth are always growing. Squirrels chew on things to keep their teeth from becoming unmanageable. By nature in the wild they chew on tree bark, on twigs and on other naturally hard items. But if squirrels are in your attic, they will chew on everything from wiring, wood beams, supporting roof braces, fascia boards, drywall and even electrical fixtures. Squirrels destroy insulation and reduce your R-factor because they push it around and trample it down. Fecal matter and urine from squirrels in your attic will also contaminate your insulation and creates a serious health hazard for you and your home. Female squirrels that are preparing for birth also create holes and damage drywall and ceilings because they are scratching and digging to prepare the nest and are working to strengthen their leg muscles which assists in the birthing process.
